This guide covers the hardware, display, audio, networking, and firewall requirements for connecting to a Studio in the Cloud editorial workstation. Use it when setting up a new edit bay or troubleshooting connectivity and performance.
Recommended hardware
You need a thin client at your desk that connects to the cloud workstation via HP Anyware. Two options are supported:
Option 1: Thin Client PC (preferred)
- Intel-based i5/i7 CPU, 11th Gen or newer (CPU must have AVX2 support)
- Minimum 3x display outputs on client GPU
- 8 GB RAM
- 1 Gbit Ethernet NIC
- Windows 10 or higher
Option 2: Mac
- Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) based Mac, with minimum 3x HD display support
- 8 GB RAM
- 1 Gbit Ethernet NIC (for MacBooks, use a Thunderbolt-based adapter rather than USB)
- macOS 14 or higher
- System Configuration: Mission Control > Displays Have Separate Spaces must be enabled
Notes:
- Intel-based Macs and AMD GPU-based workstations may work, but performance and reliability are not guaranteed.
- Client workstations should be no older than 4 years from date of purchase, with internal hardware components no older than 6 years.
Additional requirements for cloud DaVinci Resolve workflows:
- Licensed DaVinci Resolve 20.0.1 or newer installed on the client system
- Blackmagic UltraStudio or Decklink clean video output card
- Blackmagic Micro, Mini, or Advanced panel
Recommended display spec
Color:
- 100% sRGB / Rec709 coverage, IPS display
- Factory calibration color accuracy Delta E < 2
Resolution:
For a 3-monitor setup with full-screen playback on the 3rd monitor:
- 3x HD (1920x1080)
For a 2-monitor setup:
- 2x QHD (2560x1440)
- Apple Retina 14-inch (3024x1964) + QHD (2560x1440) external
- Apple Retina 16-inch (3456x2234) + HD (1920x1080) external
For a 1-monitor setup:
- UHD (3840x2160)
Note: 5K/6K monitors such as Apple Studio Display, Apple XDR, and 5K ultrawides are not supported at this time. They may work, but performance and functionality are not guaranteed.
Audio configuration
- Option 1: On-board system audio output via 3.5 mm jack.
- Option 2: USB-based stereo DAC such as Audient or Focusrite, with the buffer set to a low-latency setting.
Notes:
- Bluetooth headphones, Bluetooth speakers, and speakers built into Apple displays are not supported. Some Thunderbolt audio devices on Mac may also have issues.
- Only 2.0 stereo audio configuration is currently supported.
Full-screen reference video feed
- Option 1: Avid full-screen mode (Ctrl+Shift+F), no additional hardware required.
- Option 2: Colorfront Streamer, requires a Blackmagic or AJA clean video output card.
The diagram below shows how the HP Anyware stream, audio, and reference video outputs are routed in each configuration:
Networking requirements
- Connection: Wired RJ45 Ethernet or SFP fiber
- Bandwidth: 150 Mbit download reservation per workstation
- Latency to AWS availability zone: less than 40 ms (the lower, the better)
- Jitter: less than 3 ms
- Packet loss: less than 0.1%
Note: Wi-Fi may work but performance varies dramatically and it is not recommended for production use.
Firewall configuration
For editorial (HP Anyware):
- Layer 3/4: allow all outbound connections to any IP on port 4172 UDP + TCP
- Layer 7: allow outbound connection to the production-specific Leostream gateway address on port 443 TCP
For DaVinci Resolve panels:
- Allow inbound connection (port forwarding) to port 20323 TCP on the local machine from the production-specific NAT gateway public IP
